Super yacht electrical solutions at ptw Shipyard

The demand for faster and more efficient superyachts is a constant driving force within the yachting industry.  This persistent push to provide new and more advanced technologies is present not only in new designs and builds, but also in the booming superyacht refit and repair market.  The drive to find more advanced and sustainable ways to operate and power yachts means that for today’s marine electricians, keeping afloat with the newest electrical and automation systems requires regular training and a keen interest in the advancement of their skillset.

We asked Domingo García, the Head of the Electrics & Systems Department at ptw Shipyard if he could spare us a few minutes from his busy daily schedule to talk to us about these advancements, how they affect the day to day running of a superyacht, and his skilled team of electricians at the Tarragona port shipyard.

What are the technical demands of a Superyacht?

Perching himself on the edge of a nearby bench Domingo settles down to tell us just how technically demanding and enormously interesting his role at the shipyard really is.  Today´s superyacht, he explains, needs to be many things to many people. The common use of a range of digital and electrical devices in our daily lives as well as the demand for more precise and automated instruments has meant that superyachts have advanced technically in an exponential way over the past number of years.  Add to this demand, owners who are more aware of their carbon footprint, who are constantly seeking greener, more efficient and more environmentally friendly solutions for day-to-day operations, and you can easily see how this industry has had to leap ahead technically in order to satisfy a very exacting and unwavering market.

When are specialist electricians needed?

Domingo goes on to explain that most superyachts have on-board engineers who can deal with the day-to-day technical requirements while at sea.  The Electrical Technical Officer (ETO) will resolve minor issues aboard but with such a vast array of possible complications onboard and the demand for the installation of higher levels of automation, and upgrades to more advanced digital systems during refits, support and assistance is often needed from professional shipyard´s electrical departments also.

The experienced in-house certified electricians that work in ptw Shipyards Electrical Department are all Domingo´s team and are always happy to assist captains, yacht management and owners when and where they can.  From simple routine maintenance and troubleshooting to installation design and new installs, he and his team pride themselves on delivering quality assurance and transparency in every task or project they undertake.

What services are provided by the electrical systems department?

The list of services and solutions that the ptw Shipyard Electrical Systems Department specialise in is quite impressive, and includes control panels, power management systems, electric engines, AC circuits, alarms and monitoring systems as well as shore power converters and bespoke control systems, the list goes on.  In addition to the wide range of electrical solutions they offer, the highly qualified team offers surveying and testing as well as expertise in marine electronics and lightning.  If it’s electrical, Domingo boasts, then his team can advise, test, maintain and install it on any superyacht.

Is there any additional advantage to using ptw Shipyard for a project?

To add to this impressive list of skill sets, he tells us about another great advantage that the in-house team can offer visiting superyachts.  It comes from ptw Shipyard’s perfect location right next to the Port Tarraco Marina.  Due to the proximity of the marina, the in-house team can arrange berthing for client yachts at the marina and work on them from there.  This is a truly great and convenient benefit for contracting this Tarragona based shipyard.

When it comes to industry knowledge and dedication, it’s obvious to anyone who has worked with them that Domingo García and his team of electricians take pride in every project they embark upon. Their thirst for technical knowledge is as relentless as the enjoyment they take in a job well done, which serves to guarantee total satisfaction to each and every client they work with.
